Central Union Warehouse was a 700-foot long bulk freight transfer and distribution facility built in the early 1900’s. Railroad cars pulled along one side of the structure, unloaded freight, which was then picked up by trucks along the other side of the facility for distribution.
CEM performed a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) that included testing for asbestos containing materials (ACM). The Phase I ESA, along with identifying significant quantities of ACM, identified enough concern for subsurface contamination to warrant a Phase II ESA.
CEM’s Phase II activities included interior sampling for PCB’s, and soil, subsurface and ground water sampling for PCB’s, metals and organic compounds. Although some areas of contamination were identified, the overall level and extent was not enough to significantly affect subsequent demolition and site development.
